Saturday Seminars
VRCBVI offers approximately twenty Saturday classes a year on various technology related topics. Appropriate participants are adults with visual impairments and technology service providers. Beginning Excel with JAWS
On Saturday, March 7, 2009 the Virginia Rehabilitation Center for the Blind and Vision Impaired will offer training in Beginning Excel in VISTA for JAWS users. The class will meet from 9:00 to 3:00 in the VRCBVI Activities and Administration Building.
This seminar is designed for Beginning Excel users who are using VISTA and have prior experience with JAWS.
Seminar Costs: $25.00 (includes lunch and refreshments)

JAWS 9.1 in Vista with Microsoft Word 2007
On Saturday, March 7, 2009 the Virginia Rehabilitation Center for the Blind and Vision Impaired will offer training in JAWS with Microsoft Word. The class will meet from 9:00 to 3:00 in the VRCBVI Activities and Administration Building.
This seminar is designed for new JAWS users interested in learning to use Microsoft Office Word 2007.
Seminar Costs: $25.00 (includes lunch and refreshments).
Registration Deadline: Feb. 20, 2009
JAWS skills will include:
- JAWS Speech Adjustments: volume, rate, person, pitch, punctuation
- Typing Echo: character, word, both, none
- Reading: character, word, line, document
- Spell current word
- Reading Title Bar
- Reading Status Bar
- Defining, recognizing, and routing JAWS and PC cursors
Microsoft Word skills will include:
- Starting MS Word
- Opening an existing file
- Exploring cursor movements
- Editing a document
- Delete, Backspace, Select Text, Spell Check, Find, Replace
- Creating a document
- Margins, Alignment (right, left, center, full), Formatting Text (bold, italics, underline), Line Spacing, Selecting Text (cut, copy, paste), and Envelopes
- Save As versus Save

PAC Mate
The Virginia Rehabilitation Center for the Blind and Vision Impaired and Freedom Scientific will offer PAC Mate training on Saturday, March 7, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the VRCBVI Activities and Administration Building.
Prerequisites: Proficiency in Grade 1 Braille and keyboarding using either six-key Braille entry or qwerty keyboard
Seminar Costs: $25.00 (includes lunch and refreshments)
Registration Deadline: Feb. 20, 2009
Level I – Beginner skills will include:
- Moving through menus and opening menu items
- Getting help
- Setting voice commands
- Setting keyboard and reading commands
- Accessing the manual
- Creating new files in FS Edit
- Opening existing files in FS Edit
- Using reading commands in FS Edit
- Using editing commands in FS Edit
- Formatting text in FS Edit
- Saving files in FS Edit

- Using the spell checker in Pocket Word
- Cutting, copying, and pasting text in Pocket Word
- Deleting and renaming files
- Printing Pocket Word files
- Making folders
- Copying and moving files to specific folders
- Copying and moving files to specific drives
- Saving files in specific formats

- Using the standard calculator

BRAILLENOTE BT & VOICEMAIL BT
On Saturday, April 4, 2009 the Virginia Rehabilitation Center for the Blind and Vision Impaired and Integration Technologies Group, Inc. will offer Beginner Level BrailleNote and VoiceNote training. Instruction will be provided from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the VRCBVI Activities and Administration Building.
Prerequisites: Proficiency in Grade 1 Braille
Seminar Costs: $25.00 (includes lunch and refreshments)

DUXBURY BRAILLE TRANSLATOR
The Virginia Rehabilitation Center for the Blind and Vision Impaired will offer Duxbury Braille Translator 10.3 training on Saturday, April 4, 2009 in the VRCBVI Activities and Administration Building. Participants can sign up for either the 9:00 to 11:30 session or the 12:30 to 3:00 session.
Prerequisites:
- Ability to independently operate a computer in Windows using vision or JAWS voice
- Proficiency in Grade II Braille
Seminar Costs: $20.00 (includes lunch and refreshments)
Registration Deadline: March 20, 2009Skills will include:
- Keying in a document in MS Word to be brailled
- Editing a document in MS Word in preparation for brailling
- Opening a Word document in Duxbury
- Exploring layout, document and global settings
- Checking and if necessary editing the Duxbury print document
- Saving the Duxbury print document
- Translating the Duxbury print document to a Duxbury braille document
- Checking and if necessary editing the Duxbury braille document
- Saving the Duxbury braille document
- Choosing the braille embosser from Duxbury
- Setting up the braille embosser to receive the Duxbury braille document
